June 2016 Training Teams

Coaches, Format, and Cost

June 6th - July 29th

Morning and late afternoon training teams are being offered again this year.  If a player is registered for a morning session and is not out of school when we begin, that player should simply attend when school is out and fees will be prorated by $15 per practice.  We will not be prorating for any other reasons (vacation, sickness, etc).

The cost for this summer session has been reduced as we move to 1 and 1/2 hour practice plans.  We will compress practice to include all our more important periods as we cut down on warm-ups and cool down periods somewhat.  This should help families fit practice in their schedule more easily.  These sessions are 1st come, 1st serve with a 32 player max in each session for your age group.  We will be evaluating players to split the those registered into 2 skill groups where possible.

Practice times for the summer session are 9:30-11:00am and 5:00-6:30pm.  We will return to our longer practice plans in the fall session.

Practices: This summer we will be offering Training Teams in the morning and afternoon.  You will sign up for one or the other.  Players are not permitted to attend an early session one day a week and a late practice on the other day of that week.  You must practice either in the morning or the afternoon.

Age Groups:  This summer we are looking to form Training Teams in the INCOMING 4th - 9th grades.  This session will include 2 levels of play in each age groups.  Each team will be led by an Elevation VBC lead trainer so you know that our goals will be reached.  We use a 1:8 coaching ration as opposed to 1:15 or higher ratio that other programs use.  All players will be evaluated before practices begin and then minor players swaps will be made during the 1st week of practice if needed.   There are no restrictions on the number of players from the same school practicing together during June and July.

Format:  The summer teams will meet twice a week in the upper age groups.  Practices will be 1.5 hours long for the summer session only.  Most practices will be just that, team practices with drills and team concepts being taught along side drills to improve skills.   "Skills days" are dedicated to a specific skill if it is identified as necessary for any of the teams.  There will be no "league games" or tournaments requiring travel but there will be scrimmaging between the groups so we can work on team concepts.  We want to play games but only if we can coach the girls 1st so we can have a decent result.  Games for the sake of games simply isn't our philosophy with this activity.  There will also be a plyometric/conditioning component in many practices.  During the summer we also incorporate sand volleyball practices which add energy to the training and challenges the players through the conditioning the sand requires.

Goals:  Each team has a set of goals for the season which will include learning either Rover, Rotation, or Perimeter defense.  Since this is an 8 week session we will suspend more of the warm-up and cool down periods in order to fit in more scrimmaging after the first 3 weeks. Serving, attacking, passing, blocking (where applicable), and setting will be worked on by the entire group.  We will teach a 6-2 offense to most teams and we will at least introduce the group to many of the things they will see in the future.  We want to focus on training at a reasonable price and time commitment.  Our best coaches are committed to this endeavor.  This offering is for players who wish to pursue volleyball as a high school sport.  It is not a sign-up and play activity or something to get your daughter out of the house for some exercise.  We want to positively impact girls who think they may pursue volleyball as their future high school sport.  Teams with beginner players will be expected to compete in the same or similar drills as we push the more advanced players.  Each player will get out of this what they put into it.  Since wins and losses are not a factor in this activity, it does not matter that everyone is not at exactly the same level but we do have tryout/evaluations to split players into skill groups to help practices run more smoothly.

Coaches:  This program is being developed and run by Elevation Volleyball Club.  Current and past coaches include Jeni Case, Amanda Meadows, Erin Wilson, Lisa Schaad, Rose Grafton, Cheryl Korfhagen, Amy Cooper, Barb Beckelhimer, Omar Elias, Jill O'Brien, Kim Brewer, Beth Lawson, and other guest instructors.  For your daughters volleyball development you're going to be hard pressed to find more knowledgeable coaches than these trainers. We are continually updating this offering to get the most out of our practice time with the girls.  The goal is to give players an opportunity to learn from upper level coaches at a price that is much less than JO's.  To enter 2 full sessions of Express Training (about 5 months) would cost less than $500 as opposed to a Regional JO team which costs about $1000-$1200 or a National JO team which costs about $1800-$2200.  The other advantage is not having to travel and you get a National level coach who can commit to this activity because of the schedule.  At the U10-U13 age groups this is a very good option.  By U14's most players who are playing volleyball as their main sport will gravitate toward JO's but not all due to the schedule and costs.  Having a set practice schedule, a great coach, and a facility and staff committed to volleyball ensures that any effort you give will be rewarded with better play and a better knowledge base.

Cost:  This summer session will cost $240 and includes all courts fees, instructors, balls, misc. equipment, and a team shirt.  4th and 5th grade teams will pay $130 per player while the 3rd and 4th grade Intro to VB classes on Fridays will cost $60 for 8 weeks.  Players in the Incoming 4th grade should sign up for the Intro to VB Classes as opposed to a Training Team starting out.  Training Teams are for players with at least some experience even though we will see players in the 5th and 6th grades with no experience for our Drill groups.  5th and 6th grade players should think about summer camps if they have not played before.  We will allow you to register for a Training Team at that age with no experience but the group will be pushed at a faster pace than you may be comfortable.  This activity for players who are looking for volleyball, not a recreational activity.  We know that players will miss for vacation or random summer conflicts but do not sign up if you can only be here 1/2 of the time.
